3. Regional maxima

The maximum value within a specific range (locality) is called a local maximum. The conditions for a local maximum are that it is a connected element pixel with the same pixel value and that it is surrounded by pixels with values less than that of the pixel.

As an example, the local maximum in a 6x6 image is shown in Figure 1.
